What Type of Car Insurance Do You Need for Your Car?

Car insurance can be a bit of a minefield, especially if you’re not sure what you’re looking for. While it’s possible to take any deal that pops up, this might not give you the level of cover you’re looking for. This guide will go through some different types of cars that you might be looking for insurance for, helping you to identify your needs and the type of insurance that will best meet them.

Everyday cars

These are the easiest type of cars to find insurance for. If you use your car for your daily commute, going shopping, or picking up your children from school, you’ll likely need a general comprehensive policy. The plan you select will depend on whether you just need accident cover or want to insure your car against theft as well. Luckily, you’ll have a huge selection of packages to choose from, as everyday car insurance is the most common type out there. To get started, compare car insurance policies with Money Expert and find a plan that works for your unique needs.

Electric cars

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular, so many insurance companies now have special car insurance policies to keep them safe. While you may be able to insure your electric car with a normal car insurance policy, a specialised policy can make it easier to get the parts you need to get your car up and running again.

Classic cars

If you’re an avid classic car collector or simply have one in your garage that you inherited from a grandparent, you may need special car insurance. Classic car insurance is specially designed to protect rare and valuable vehicles which you may or may not drive very often. Fortunately, while these policies are specialised, they’re not unaffordable, especially if you keep your classic car in good condition. Make sure you’re clear on how much you can claim if your classic car is ever stolen or destroyed, as your car may increase in value over the years and you wouldn’t want to be caught out.

Luxury cars

Insuring a luxury car can be more expensive than your standard everyday vehicle. Not only is this because they are usually more expensive to repair, but because they are more likely to be targeted by thieves. Luxury cars are also seen as riskier to insure because some of them can reach very high speeds, which increases their chances of being seriously damaged in a crash. To reduce your premiums when taking out a luxury car insurance policy, think about adding a tracker or extra security features to your car to make it easier to locate should it ever go missing.

Most of the time, your car insurance will cover whatever car you have, but if you have an unusual car or one that falls into any of the categories above, it can be worth seeking out a specialist policy. There’s nothing worse than being in an accident or having your car vandalised only to realise that your insurance isn’t going to pay out what you thought, so find the right policy for your vehicle the first time around.
