How to Create a Product to Sell Online in 5 Simple Steps

Considering entering the exciting world of ecommerce with an amazing new product?

Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur or an established business looking to expand your online presence, this article will walk you through the essential steps to transform a mere idea into a viable product that shoppers will want to buy.

Let’s dive in!

1. Generate ideas

The first step in creating a product to sell online is to generate ideas for your future superstar release. The goal is to brainstorm and explore potential product concepts that align with your interests, expertise, and market demand. Start by identifying problems or gaps in the market that your product can address or solutions that can enhance people’s lives.

You can also look for inspiration in your own experiences, hobbies, or areas of expertise that could be transformed into a sellable product. It’s important to consider how technology, trends, and emerging industries can influence your ideas as well. In addition, you can reach out to your existing customer base (if applicable) or engage with online communities to gather feedback and ideas for product improvements.

During this step, maintaining an open mind is key. Even if an idea seems silly at first, it could turn out to be quite profitable after just a bit of tweaking or inspire another successful idea!

2. Perform market research

Next, you’ll need to do some market research in order to obtain valuable insights into your target audience, competitors, and pricing landscape. By understanding these key aspects, you can identify a unique selling point (USP) that sets your product apart and resonates with your customers.

Begin by defining your target audience and conducting in-depth research to understand their preferences, needs, and pain points. Analyze demographic data, online behavior, and customer feedback to gain a comprehensive understanding of their expectations.

Then, examine your competitors’ products and marketing strategies. This analysis will help you identify gaps in the market and opportunities for differentiation. Understanding what your competitors are offering and how they position themselves will help you to create a product that stands out and addresses unmet needs.

Pricing research is equally crucial. Take a look at the pricing strategies of your competitors and determine a pricing model that aligns with your product’s value and your target customers’ willingness to pay.

3. Develop your product

Once you have a more specific vision in mind for the type of item you’d like to create to sell online, it’s time to develop your product. Product development involves bringing your idea to life by designing and creating a tangible or digital product that meets the needs and expectations of your target audience.

First, you’ll create a detailed product concept and outline the features, specifications, and functionalities you want to include. This will serve as a blueprint for the development process.

Next, develop a prototype or minimum viable product (MVP) to test the core functionalities and gather feedback from potential customers. This iterative approach allows you to make improvements and refinements based on real-world insights.

After you have a functional prototype, move on to the full-scale development. This may involve hiring a development team or working with manufacturers to produce physical products. For digital products, you’ll focus on creating a user-friendly interface and ensuring seamless functionality.

Throughout the development process, conduct rigorous quality testing to identify and fix any issues or bugs. This will ensure that your final product meets high-quality standards and provides a great user experience.

4. Create your product packaging

With your concrete product in hand, you can start working on building a strong brand identity and creating appealing packaging for your product. Spending some time on your product packaging is crucial as it directly impacts the customer experience.

Well-designed packaging reinforces your brand image, sets your product apart from competitors, and can evoke positive emotions in buyers. What’s more, it ensures safe delivery, reducing the risk of damage during transit. A visually appealing package enhances product perception and encourages repeat purchases.

Consider the packaging’s practicality for shipping and handling while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing appearance. It’s also worth keeping in mind that sustainability is becoming increasingly important to online shoppers.

In fact, according to a recent study by Statista involving consumers from the US and the UK, 52% of respondents wanted their favorite brands to create products with less packaging or that incorporated recycled packaging. It’s therefore advantageous to take an eco-friendly approach when designing your product packaging.

5. Set up an online store and start marketing

Of course, if you want to start selling a product on the internet, it makes sense that setting up an online store will be an integral part of the process!

While you could opt to offer your creation on online marketplaces, launching your own ecommerce website, such as by creating an online boutique with WiziShop, will give you the most control and make it easier to grow your business when you’re ready.

Start by choosing the right ecommerce platform that aligns with your business needs and budget. Create an account and customize your store’s design to reflect your brand identity. Add your new product to your website, ensuring that you’ve included a clear product description, high-quality images, and pricing details.

Once your online store is ready to go, you’ll need to let the world know that it exists by availing of a variety of marketing tactics. Don’t forget to implement effective SEO strategies to enhance your store’s visibility in search engines and attract organic traffic. Regularly update your site with new products, promotions, and customer testimonials to keep it engaging and informative, and you’ll be well on your way to ecommerce success!
