For the past several years, Dean has had a keen interest in the genetics of violent behavior. In 2014, Dean published a study of the monoamine oxidase A gene in violent offenders. Dean reported that 62% of the violent offenders had a low activity form of this gene, as compared to only 20% of the nonviolent offenders (Stetler, D.A., et al., J. Psychiatric Res., 2014, 58: 69-75). These results strongly indicated that the MAOA gene plays a significant role in the development of violent behavior in our society. Dean has been working on identification of other gene variants involved in predisposition to commit violence.
In 2019, he will report that a variant in a serotonin receptor gene, when present with a low activity MAOA gene, results in violent criminal behavior in nearly 100 % of subjects (Stetler, et al., 2019, manuscript in preparation).
