For decades, referrals have been the lifeblood of the plumbing industry.
When a homeowner needed a plumber, they would ask a neighbor, friend, family member, or coworker, “Do you know a good plumber?” A trusted recommendation often ended the search before it even began.
Today, that same question is being asked millions of times every day—but there’s a new source giving the recommendation.
Instead of asking people, homeowners are increasingly asking artificial intelligence.
Whether it’s ChatGPT, Google’s AI-powered Search, Perplexity, Claude, or the AI assistant built into their smartphone, more consumers are turning to AI to answer questions like:
- “Who’s the best emergency plumber near me?”
- “What plumbing company has the best reviews?”
- “Who can fix a burst pipe tonight?”
- “Which plumber should I trust?”
Instead of returning a long list of websites to compare, AI often provides a direct recommendation based on information it finds across the internet.
If your business isn’t part of that recommendation, you’re missing an opportunity to be introduced to customers before they ever visit a search engine.
AI Has Become the New Digital Referral
Consumers have always trusted recommendations because they reduce uncertainty.
Hiring a plumber is a decision that involves trust. Homeowners want someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, responsive, and fairly priced.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to fill the role that word-of-mouth referrals once dominated. AI systems analyze information from company websites, online reviews, business directories, and other trusted sources to determine which businesses appear to be the most credible for a specific situation.
In many cases, homeowners accept the recommendation and move directly to contacting the business.
That makes AI more than another search tool.
It’s becoming a digital referral network.
The Goal Is No Longer Just Ranking on Google
Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) focuses on helping businesses appear near the top of search results.
Artificial intelligence changes that model.
Instead of showing consumers ten businesses and asking them to choose, AI attempts to identify which businesses best answer the customer’s question.
Rather than competing for clicks, companies are increasingly competing to become the recommendation itself.
That’s a significant shift in how consumers discover local service providers.
What Artificial Intelligence Looks For
Unlike people, AI isn’t influenced by flashy graphics or clever advertising slogans.
It evaluates information.
Businesses that are most likely to be recommended typically have several characteristics in common:
- Detailed descriptions of their services
- Helpful educational content that answers customer questions
- Accurate and consistent business information across the web
- Recent customer reviews with specific details
- Clearly defined service areas
- Evidence of experience and expertise
Think of AI as a researcher rather than a shopper. It looks for trustworthy information that consistently supports the same conclusions across multiple sources.
Expertise Has Become a Competitive Advantage
Many plumbing websites still rely primarily on marketing language.
Statements like “We’re the best plumbers in town” may appeal to potential customers, but they provide very little useful information for AI systems.
Now compare that with a website explaining:
- What causes low water pressure
- Warning signs of a slab leak
- When a water heater should be repaired versus replaced
- Steps homeowners should take during a plumbing emergency
That type of educational content demonstrates expertise while giving AI useful information it can reference when answering consumer questions.
Teaching has become one of the most effective forms of marketing.
Detailed Reviews Matter More Than Ever
Customer reviews remain one of the strongest trust signals online, but the content of those reviews is becoming increasingly important.
A review that simply says, “Great service,” provides very little context.
A review that says, “They answered our emergency call at 10 p.m., arrived within 45 minutes, repaired a burst pipe, and explained every step of the repair,” tells both future customers and AI systems much more about the business.
Specific experiences create stronger trust signals than generic praise.
Answer the Questions Customers Are Already Asking
Every day, homeowners ask AI thousands of plumbing-related questions.
Examples include:
- Why is my water heater leaking?
- Is a clogged sewer line an emergency?
- Why does my faucet suddenly have low pressure?
- How much does a water heater replacement usually cost?
- Can frozen pipes burst after they thaw?
Businesses that publish clear, accurate answers to these common questions increase their chances of becoming part of AI-generated recommendations.
A Simple Exercise
Take a few minutes to ask ChatGPT or another AI assistant questions your customers might ask.
For example:
- “Who are the most trusted plumbers in my city?”
- “Who would you recommend for emergency plumbing repairs?”
- “What’s the best plumbing company for water heater replacement near me?”
Pay attention to which businesses appear—and whether your own company is mentioned.
If it isn’t, that doesn’t necessarily mean your business lacks credibility. It may simply mean AI doesn’t have enough clear, trustworthy information to confidently recommend you.
Looking Ahead
Artificial intelligence is changing how homeowners find local service providers.
Just as businesses once adapted to search engines, they now have an opportunity to adapt to AI-powered recommendations.
Companies that consistently publish helpful information, maintain accurate online profiles, and build strong customer reputations will be better positioned as AI becomes an increasingly common starting point for consumers.
The businesses that earn AI’s trust today are likely to earn more customer trust tomorrow.
