We profile her to discover more about this amazing woman and her incredible career. graduate of the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Law (LL.B. 1996 and LL.D. 2010) and of Harvard University (LL.M. 1991), Professor Valois has proven herself one of the region’s most formidable legal minds. Drawing on a wealth of expertise, she has pushed forward the way in which the law is seen in academic circles, having a transformative effect on the industry at large. Professor Valois started her career in private practice, working with the firm McCarthy Tetrault in Montreal and later moved into the Department of Justice, Canada where she was Senior Counsel in the immigration law directorate. This mix of private and public service gave her the grounding, and the determination, to study for a doctorate. She joined the ranks of the Faculty of Law at the Université de Montréal in 2011, focusing her research on the topic of judicial independence. Her thesis explored the way in which the judicial function had changed over time, in light of historical alterations in the organization of political powers and the making of law. Published in 2011, it was prefaced by former Supreme Court of Canada justice Michel Bastarache and won the 2012 Walter-Owen Prize from the Canadian Bar Association. Since publication, Professor Valois has spoken at numerous academic conferences, professional development programs and judicial education seminars on the topic of judicial independence in Canada, Europe, China, and Israel, and even contributed to a study on the independence of administrative justice in Quebec. Her knowledge of the sector has made her the go-to person when looking to explore what judicial independence means and how to achieve better results across the spectrum. She is frequently sought after by various media in Quebec and Canada for her unique knowledge and perspective on legal matters. Having been a member of the Bar of Quebec since 1988, Professor Valois received the Lawyer Emeritus distinction from the Bar in 2017.
