Acquisition International - Issue 3 2022 25 Maintaining projects across the globe, Arvet has delved into a world of sustainable building. From creating entirely wooden apartment blocks to donating village halls, the company is on a mission to better the planet through introducing communities to green living. Comfortable, creative, and stylish are all words that can be used to describe Arvet’s eco-friendly builds. Jan22199 fter decades of creating buildings in Sweden, over the past year, Arvet has taken its mission worldwide. Indeed, whilst the company has been operating since 1968 (until 2019 under the name of Folkhem), it was in 2007 that the company turned its focus towards sustainability, using the innovative approach of designing and building housing solely out of timber. Henceforth, Arvet is now on a mission to promote the benefits of developing residential buildings and community structures out of wood, stating, ‘The cities of the future, we believe, must start out life as forests […] This is all part of a larger operation: saving planet Earth.’ Wooden buildings are durable, natural, and warm, offering an atmosphere of stylish comfort and radiating beauty. Simply, they are a way for people to connect with the fundamental elements of the planet. Of course, on top of the benefits it provides to a living environment, the material is also sustainable. Arvet, alongside using wood within its projects, also believes in replenishing the forests and woodlands. This has proven to be a relatively easy task, particularly within its home country, Sweden, that has a long history of forestry. (In Sweden there is a law since more than a hundred years says “for each tree you take down you need to plant a new one” Today we plant 3-4). It is with this in mind that Arvet has developed and built Sweden’s first and highest apartment buildings totally in wood. The first building completed in 2013, the project culminated in 64 apartments and three business spaces spreadacross eight storeys. As it takes approximately one minute for Sweden’s forests to generate enough wood for one of these buildings, it can be said that they are incredibly eco-friendly to produce. Moreover, through this style, Arvet has eliminated the use of concrete above ground. (For info, the foundations is still in concrete) In turn, this reduces the impact on the earth’s oceans, as much of the sand used in concrete is sourced from the ocean floor. Additionally, it also results in the wide-spread contamination of seawater. Using wood therefore reduces this negative environmental impact. Most recently, Arvet visited Kenya in order to launch a brand-new project for UN-Habitat. Arvet donated and, subsequently, partook in developing and building of the all-new, entirely wooden Kalobeyei Community Hall, for which it collaborated with Petra Gipp Studio, Ramboll Sweden, and Setra Group. Originally due to take place in A 2020, the project, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was delayed until last year. In addition, the project also saw the introduction of a new playground and communal areas for young people, men, and women. Such projects contribute to Arvet’s devotion to the United Nation’s Global Goals, which includes aims such as no poverty, quality education, and reduced inequalities. It is these goals that guide the company’s overall mission, informing it to provide the best possible service to the communities that it operates within. Be it through providing comfortable residential spaces, or creating green buildings, Arvet is on track to change the world.
