The company currently offers virtual coaching in song writing, voice, guitar, and piano, as well as one free community group session for anyone who might be financially struggling to gain the music skills and knowledge to jumpstart their career. Valencia Callens Neptune founded So Am I-Worthy after assessing the needs she faced as a minority female singer-songwriter and noting the same struggles among her peers. She says, “I wanted to create a company I knew I would not give up on and that was intertwined with my passions which are music, female empowerment, and social impact! I have been working since the age of 15 in many different industries, which have shaped how I operate So Am I-Worthy.” Being a woman in the corporate world for many years, Valencia has been discriminated against, overlooked, spoken over, and she has felt less than and incapable of success – Even though her work exceeded her male counterparts on many occasions. She shares, “I was told that men are better leaders and women shouldn’t lead because they are too emotional. My advice to anyone trying to make it in the corporate world or the music industry is to know yourself so well that no one can tell you who you are. Construct positive self-affirmations and speak them daily to remind yourself of your greatness. The music industry is a very critical place, so if you are not confident in your capabilities or your talent, your journey will be a lot harder and a lot less fun! Remember you are worthy, walk that way!” Valencia has however over the years seen positive change in the form of the struggles of women in the music industry being acknowledged, but there is still a lot of work to be done. She has noticed that progress is being made in diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially pertaining to women. Conversations have started and studies are taking place – but actually employing female singer-songwriters or providing them a seat at the table is still stagnant. So, Am I-Worthy was created to provide more opportunities for women in the industry, especially minorities, and to raise the percentage of successful active singer-songwriters. Now looking ahead, the future of So Am I-Worthy is definitely bright.
