August’s M&A value represents the third-largest monthly figure in 2020, behind July and June, when deals worth USD 105,835 million and USD 124,387 million, respectively, were announced. In a 12-month comparison, volume fell 37 per cent from 2,134 deals in August 2019, while value declined 6 per cent from USD 111,698 million. Four deals topped the USD 10,000 million barrier in August 2020 and together accounted for half of total M&A value in the month under review. In the largest of these, Siemens Healthineers Holdings has agreed to acquire US-based Varian Medical Systems for USD 16,400 million. This deal was also the third-largest transaction targeting a TMT company to have been announced globally in 2020 to date. In the second biggest deal, Softbank Group agreed to sell an almost 20 per cent stake in Softbank Corporation for USD 12,658 million. Warburg Pincus, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, TPG Capital Advisors and General Atlantic Service Company agreed to acquire Norway’s Visma for USD 12,200 million and Intercontinental Exchange is buying Ellie Mae for USD 11,000 million. Ten of the top 20 deals by value targeted companies based in the US, Cayman Islands-incorporated groups featured twice, while Japan, Norway, Switzerland, China, Bermuda and the UK were all targeted in one deal apiece in August 2020. Value in the third quarter of 2020 to date is lower than for Q2 2020, although there is still a month to go until the end of the quarter. There have been 3,337 deals worth USD 210,299 million announced in Q3 2020 to date, compared to 7,037 deals worth USD 270,449 million in Q2 2020 and 6,978 deals worth USD 223,693 million in Q1 2020. As there are still four weeks left until the end of Q3 2020, value could potentially reach or exceed levels recorded in the first two quarters of the year to date. If the four deals worth over USD 10,000 million announced in August are any indication of things to come, the TMT industry could end the quarter, and possibly the year, on a positive note.
