72 Acquisition International - Issue 9 2019 Jul19515 Woman Power: Privacy and Tech Earlier this year, Ken-Ying Tseng was selected as the most influential woman in Taiwan in the field of personal data protection in 2019 by Acquisition International (AI) Magazine for her excellence in personal data protection practice, especially in the tech and digital sector. Delivering quality services and an ample experienced which is well-recognized by the legal society, Ken-Ying also contributes her knowledge and wisdom in advising the Taiwan government for obtaining the GDPR adequacy decision. In 2012, Ken-Ying established the personal data protection practice group at Lee and Li and has been the lead partner of the practice group since then. In 2018, she started the summer off by acting as a special consultant to the “Personal Data Protection Office” of the Taiwan government, to facilitate Taiwan’s application with the European Union for the GDPR adequacy decision. In addition to this, she is also the co-chair of the Taipei Chapter of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) currently. Ken-Ying’s career path in personal data protection matter initially began in 1996, when she was still an intern lawyer prior to attending Harvard Law School, where she finished her LLM thesis on the topic of e-money under the supervision of Professor Lawrence Lessig. Since graduating, Ken-Ying continued her journey to success, becoming one of the first Taiwanese who had the opportunity to voice out on data privacy issues at the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF, being a sub-section of the Internet Governance Forum (“IGF”) run by the United Nations). In 2011, she acted as a panelist at the workshop of the APrIGF held in Singapore, to share the Taiwan perspectives on the topics of cybersecurity, privacy and data protection with the regional leaders. Alongside being frequently interviewed by international and local publications on data privacy issues, Ken-Ying also writes articles on data privacy issues, including GDPR matters. Following the EU GDPR, which became effective in 2018, Ken-Ying has been actively promoting GDPR compliance in Taiwan, including advising the Taiwan government and Taiwanese businesses. Over the years, some of her clients have, and still, include on-line companies, fin-tech companies, financial institutions, e-commerce platforms, etc. Her next topic would be assisting Taiwanese businesses with regard to compliance in California Consumer Privacy Act.
