In Q4 2019 to date, with almost the entirety of December still to go, 2,422 deals worth USD 93,191 million have been announced, which, by value, is considerably lower than the USD 181,616 million-worth of deals recorded for Q4 2018. As 2018 was a banner year for the technology sector in terms of value, it is unlikely that 2019 will improve on that result unless a blockbuster transaction is announced in the next 25 days. Regardless, 2019 is set to have the second-largest value for any year on record in terms of technology M&A. This is partially due to five deals each worth more than USD 10,000 million, of which one accounted for the largest by value announced in November. The biggest deal of 2019 to date featured Salesforce. com Inc. completing the USD 15,700 million takeover of Tableau Software. Alibaba Group Holding completed its long- awaited secondary listing in Hong Kong in November and raised USD 11,242 million in the process. The Cayman Islands- incorporated ecommerce giant also accounted for the third-largest deal of the year to date as SoftBank, via West Raptor Holdings, sold a 3 per cent stake for USD 11,091 million. Alibaba’s USD 11,242 million share sale to gain admittance to the board in Hong Kong was almost three times the value of the second-biggest deal in November, which featured viagogo of Switzerland announcing the purchase of Stubhub for USD 4,005 million. This was followed by PayPal carrying out its largest-ever acquisition by taking over the startup Honey Science for USD 4,000 million. It is promising that despite the softening in the volume of transactions being announced, there is still significant appetite for high-value M&A deals going into the final quarter of 2019, which helps make the year one of the sector’s strongest on record.
