20 | Acquisition International, Global CFO Excellence Awards 2024 Jun24277 Energy Transition CFO of the Year 2024: Andrew Kennedy efining itself as the company responsible for ‘generating our lowcarbon future’ and ‘driving the energy transition forward through creative thinking, strong partnerships, and a commitment to quality and integrity’, Capstone Infrastructure Corporation has become a key player in North America’s energy transformation journey. Proudly in the business of clean and renewable energy – one where its people are considered its greatest asset – the organization has spent its tenure amassing recognition for its inspired and innovative solutions. Only by uplifting the creative ideas of its team can a company such as Capstone truly flourish, and it has excelled in fostering an environment that actively encourages positive participation above all else. At the helm of this commercial creativity is none other than Andrew Kennedy, whose extensive experience in the world of finance granted him the tools to pursue the position of CFO. Diligent, proactive, and capable, Andrew is an example of a leader who not only utilises his assets to influence change but goes one step further to integrate the opinions and voices of those around him into his decision making process. Initially, Andrew began his career at Ernst & Young – a role that would see him progressing to the position of VP finance to a Macquarie Bank subsidiary. As the owner of Capstone’s predecessor, it was this venture that would ultimately see Andrew through to the responsibilities he holds today. So, in 2016, when the opportunity to onboard a leading role in fulfilling Capstone’s new mandate to transition from a broader infrastructure play to a clean and independent energy power producer arose, Andrew was more than eager to participate. Though demanding in every aspect – namely in its strategic direction, funding and risk management requirements – Andrew was granted the chance to truly demonstrate his capabilities and played a key role in mentoring and building the team, along with the business, which is prospering. Multifaceted in nature, Andrew’s role has seen him managing a wide array of Capstone’s internal operations. From providing innovative finance and business solutions, to seeking out the best opportunities for the company’s people, he has accumulated a myriad of achievements. For instance, thanks to Andrew’s input, Capstone has been able to foster several beneficial Indigenous partnerships across Canada, raise over $1.5 billion in financing over the past decade alone, and enable customers to meet climate goals. Widely viewed as one of the top renewable energy CFO’s, Andrew adopts a distinct leadership strategy to encourage the further success of Capstone. He doesn’t simply see what works, but expands on what could work, whether this manifests through his own ideas or those of his people. Regardless, Andrew Kennedy understands what being a collective means, and actively plays to its strengths. In doing so, he’s helped to elevate Capstone to an all-new level of excellence, and it’s for this very reason that he has earned himself a position in Acquisition International’s coveted Global CFO Excellence Awards 2024. We wish him all the best as he continues to amplify Capstone’s impact on the energy transition sphere.
