Business Excellence Awards 2020

Acquisition International - 2020 Business Excellence Awards 3 Mar20114 TSD can take many forms, each just as devastating and damaging as the next. It can affect individuals emotionally, mentally, and physically, draining resources and strength in ways that few can imagine. When suffering with PTSD, having the support of anyone can be invaluable. The kindness of strangers cannot be overestimated, and Sapper Support is full to bursting with kindness and integrity. Initially aimed at helping Royal Engineers veterans, hence the name Sapper Support, this exceptional initiative quickly adapted and expanded to offer and provide help to all three arms of the military. What started with just four veteran volunteers staffing the phones has grown to thirteen, with another six programmed to start very soon. Yet, for all its growth and service, the commitment and integrity shown is unmatched. Every single one of the veteran volunteers gives their time freely to man the phones, understanding that these men and women need support, no matter what. After it became apparent that eighty percent of its volunteers worked within the arena of the 999 community, Sapper Support decided then to also cater for those individuals. Throughout every branch of the military, every 999 call, and every individual who requires help, the firm is there offer emotional, physical, and financial support, paying for both private assessments to determine a diagnosis and the subsequent treatment. Supporting veterans with PTSD in all areas requires an integrity and commitment, yes, but there is another facet. Every volunteer veteran working at Sapper Support is completely non-judgemental, understanding that what these individuals are going through is deeply personal. Sapper Support is only made possible and sustainable through donations and fundraising, and is constantly on the lookout for new funding streams to help futureproof the charity. Having newly appointed patron Major General David Southall on board has helped create new links with other organisations and departments. Now, Sapper Support is in talks with other companies that will create a more stable model moving forward, helping launch even greater initiatives, and supporting even more people than before. In order to so however, integrity has to remain key. Unfortunately, people can be cynical when it comes to donating to charity. However, upon finding out that every single person at Sapper Support is a volunteer and their money goes directly to supporting the work rather than wages, people are more likely to donate their support and money freely. Over time, the idea of what Sapper Support could be has grown from a cottage industry charity to a major player on a national level. Knowing this cannot be achieved overnight, founder Tim Evers has Founded in 2014 following the death of a friend, Sapper Support is a 24/7 crisis helpline for individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prior to that time, there wasn’t one that was staffed by veterans, people who might understand what any caller was going through. So Tim Evers, founder of Sapper Support decided to set one up. Now awarded the title of Most Dedicated Veteran Support Initiative, we find out what it took to get Sapper Support to this level, and why it refuses to stop helping. Most Dedicated Veteran Support Initiative 2020 P taken the time to create partnerships, cultivate excellent feedback, achieve credibility, and above all else, continue helping veterans, one individual at a time. Achieving credibility in a world that is increasingly cynical can be hard, but being accepted into the Helplines Partnership and Cobseo has definitely helped. Ultimately though, it is the constant integrity and servant-hearted focus of the entire team at Sapper Support, doing everything they can to help those who need it most and have already given everything for their country. There are issues within the current veteran community that continue to present an issue for those at Sapper Support. For instance, there is a serious lack of identification. When a veteran takes their own life, it is seldom recorded accordingly. Undoubtedly, the introduction of veteran identification cards would help, allowing suicides to be recorded and trends to be discovered. Armed with that information, charities such as Sapper Support would then be able to target those vulnerable areas and provide help, hopefully stopping those suicides before they happen. The complete integrity and commitment of the team at Sapper Support extends to those individuals too, ensuring that they have a safe place before things get too bad. Veterans can be amongst some of the most vulnerable people in society, and helping them should be considered a duty rather than a job. For the volunteers and individuals offering their time to Sapper Support, it is a necessity. The desire, integrity, and commitment to help those suffering with PTSD is nothing short of admirable, and the level to which these people will help is unrivalled within the industry. Sapper Support is an exceptional example of how we should take care of those who have given everything in service of their country.
